AI in high school: more than a tool, a co-pilot for the future

Within the Erasmus+ AI Understood project, we are exploring how to teach students about artificial intelligence (AI). For young people aged 15 to 18, AI is no longer a science-fiction promise but an everyday reality transforming how they learn, revise, and envision the world of tomorrow. Between the apparent “magic” and the vision of the future, here are some elements that revolve around this theme.

A “tailor-made” and adaptive learning experience

One of the greatest contributions of AI for high school students is the shift from mass teaching to adaptive learning. According to UNESCO, AI has the potential to meet learners’ individual needs by offering personalised learning paths. Let’s look at two concrete examples:

AI can offer 24/7 tutoring. Indeed, chatbot-based tools provide simplified explanations of complex physics or math concepts at any time, which may help some students feel less isolated when working on homework. Furthermore, the right to make mistakes without judgment creates a safer space where students can test hypotheses and make errors without fear of judgment. This approach reduces assessment anxiety and promotes academic perseverance, as the system offers immediate remediation rather than simply issuing a negative grade.

Demystifying “magic”: understanding the workings of the algorithm

For 15-18-year-olds, knowing how to use AI is no longer enough; understanding how it works is crucial. AI is not a conscious entity, but a complex statistical system. As the CNIL (French Data Protection Authority) points out, understanding algorithms is the first step towards informed digital citizenship. Here are two telling examples:

  • The logic of probabilities: knowing that generative AI predicts the most likely next word through deep learning, young people understand why it can sometimes “hallucinate” or invent facts with aplomb.
  • The data cycle: understanding how a model is trained allows high school students to realise that results depend on the quality of the input data. This develops a keen awareness of the need to protect their privacy: every interaction with an AI can feed into the “system,” raising essential questions about data protection and digital ethics.

The new role of the teacher: from transmitter to mentor

The arrival of AI does not make teachers obsolete; on the contrary, it makes their role more vital than ever. The European Commission’s ethical guidelines specify that AI should be used to support human interaction, not replace it. Teachers becomes an architect of learning.

  • Teachers guide critical thinking: while AI provides raw information, teachers help the student analyse, cross-reference, and verify sources. It teaches the art of nuance and context, dimensions that the machine often ignores.
  • Teachers act as emotional mediators: education remains a social endeavour. They provide the emotional connection, foster motivation, and manage ethical debates. They are the ones who help students move from simply “consuming” AI to engaging in creative “collaboration,” ensuring that technology remains a tool for empowerment and not a shortcut to intellectual laziness.

The art of “prompt” and bias detection

Using AI in high school means learning to communicate effectively with a machine. It’s a way to emphasise literacy as a cross-curricular skill. This is similar to how prompt engineering involves structuring precise instructions. It requires clear communication and the ability to conceptualise one’s needs. It’s a highly educational exercise in formal logic. Ethical awareness is also crucial, as young people must learn to detect biases. If an AI is trained on unfiltered historical data, it can reproduce sexist or racist prejudices. Learning to critically evaluate the machine’s output is a fundamental pillar of modern citizenship.

Finally, it’s also about preparing for the jobs of tomorrow.

High school is a pivotal time for career guidance. AI is already impacting all sectors: medicine, with diagnostic assistance; law, with contract analysis; and graphic design and engineering. According to OECD reports, the ability to work in synergy with automated systems will be one of the most sought-after skills in the job market. By integrating AI now, young learners are not passive recipients of the digital transition; they are becoming its key players.
